CHON BURI, June 30, 2008 – The quality of life at a poor village in this coastal province of Thailand is about to get better, thanks to a community benefit plan supported by the World Bank.Currently, Moo 10 village, in Chon Buri’s Koh Chan District, has only very basic infrastructure and limited social services. There is no clean drinking water, no lighting on the streets. Poor children cannot afford education. Deteriorating soil quality has led to declining sugar cane production, further compounding poverty.The community benefit plan will bring change. A facility to produce clean drinking water will be installed, so will street lights. Scholarships will be provided to poor students. WORLD BANK APPROVES $1.0 M FOR ENHANCED VALUE OF INTEGRATED CHILDREN’S DIGITAL LIBRARIES IN RURAL SCHOOLS OF MONGOLIA (Jun 27)
WASHINGTON DC, June 26, 2008 – The World Bank’s Board has just approved a grant of US$ 1.0 million for a additional financing under Rural Education and Development Project (READ) in Mongolia. Since December 2007, the Government of Mongolia (GoM) has been working with the One Laptop Per Child Foundation (OLPC) to introduce 20,000 XO laptop computers (computers that are specifically designed for primary school children) into the country’s schools in order to improve educational quality. In the context of this ongoing initiative, the GoM has requested additional financing under the World Bank’s Rural Education and Development Project (READ) to support its ongoing collaboration with OLPC in order to leverage READ to enhance the value of integrating children’s digital libraries with the XO laptop computer platform in rural schools. “The additional financing will support the distribution of a new deployment of XO laptop computers with Mongolia-specific educational content to children in s...


WORLD BANK APPROVES $9.3 M FOR ENHANCED MINING SECTOR DEVELOPMENT IN MONGOLIA (Jun 27)
WASHINGTON DC, June 26, 2008 – The World Bank’s Board has just approved an investment credit and grant of US$ 9.3 million for a Mining Sector Technical Assistance Project (MSTA) in Mongolia.  The proposed project is seen as the first phase of a longer-term engagement to support the Government in developing this key sector in the economy. Mongolia is experiencing a boom in its mining sector, which brings new opportunities as well as major challenges. Mongolia  has a range of potential world-class mineral deposits, and has attracted considerable investment in exploration in recent years. WASHINGTON DC, June 26, 2008 – the World Bank’s Board has just approved an investment credit and grant of US$ 5.0 million for the Enhanced Justice Sector Services Project (JSSP) in Mongolia.  The project will assist Mongolia to implement its “Millennium Development Goals-Based National Development Strategy” (NDS) by strengthening government institutions and improving the legal environment to ensure transparency and accessibility of public services. In 2007, the Parliament of Mongolia completed the preparation of a “Millennium Development Goals-Based National Development Strategy” (NDS) in which the concepts of law, justice and human rights figure prominently.
